Opening Keynote: Run with Your Partners | Kenna Powell CPP, CRMP, CSSM, CSSP and Kevin Wren It’s an Olympic year and no group of runners understands the importance of a shared goal and collaborative spirit better than the 2024 Olympic torch bearers. The preparation that goes into the safe execution of 11,000 individuals passing the torch from one to another is par none. It starts in Olympia on April 16, 2024.
Interestingly enough, there are parallels to a successful torch relay and to a safe and secure independent school campus. Kevin Wren and Kenna Powell will introduce you to important partners who will strengthen your security posture through training and practical steps in the execution of policy and procedure. The partners - local, state, federal and national organizations – can provide the “coaching” along each and every leg of prevention, mitigation, protection, response and recovery. And to help you avoid hitting the proverbial wall of limited resources, rest assured that all of these resources are free of charge. Kevin and Kenna hope to inspire you to run with your partners and together, celebrate the arrival of best practices on your campus.

Tony Pustizzi, Four Star Strategies
On February 14, 2018, a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, killed 17 individuals, and wounded another 17. Retired Chief Tony Pustizzi, a 30-year veteran with the Coral Springs Police Department, along with members of his agency, arrived at the school within minutes. A multidisciplinary approach, including law enforcement, first responders, emergency managers and school administrators and staff, was initiated. This session includes a deep dive into the events that unfolded that day.
Chief Pustizzi will also discuss many of the issues that ensued with regard to leadership and the unique challenges he experienced as an on-scene commander. He will review the response to the shooting and provide an analysis of the lessons learned. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the circumstances that contributed to the overall response to this tragedy as well as measures that must be taken to help prevent these types of incidents moving forward.
